Single Ice Crystal Growth with Controlled Orientation during Directional Freezing

Ice growth has attracted great attention for its capability of fabricating hierarchically porous microstructure. However, the formation tilted lamellar microstructure during freezing needs to be reconsidered due limited control ice orientation with respect thermal gradient in situ observations, which can greatly enrich our insight into architectural biomaterials. This paper provides an study solid/liquid interface morphology evolution directionally solidified single crystal C-axis (optical axis) perpendicular directions both and incident light poly(vinyl alcohol, PVA) solutions. Multifaceted V-shaped were clearly observed first time. Quantitative characterizations on spacing, tilt angle, tip undercooling platelets provide a clearer inherent habit polymeric aqueous systems are suggested exert significant impact future design optimization
